What the DBB does, feature by feature

The Digital Black Box reads your BMS and charger and shows every cell and every thermistor on a 4.3-inch touchscreen, while you ride and while you charge. Here's each part of it, with the device's own screens.

See the cell that's about to cost you a pack

The DBB is onboard telemetry and logging for electric motorcycles. It reads the BMS and the charger directly and puts every cell and every thermistor on a 4.3-inch touchscreen, on the bike, while you ride and while you charge.

  • Works with many popular BMS, charge management and EV drive systems, with more integrations being finalized
  • Four gauges for pack voltage, average cell, lowest cell and hottest thermistor, with a bar for every cell beside them
  • Every session saved on the device. It's your data on the device, never in the cloud

On the road

It speaks up mid-ride

When the BMS trips a cutoff, the DBB tells you which cell, how far past the limit it went and when, and an alert sounds. The ride keeps recording, so the whole story is there afterwards.

  • Restart, Override or Acknowledge from the alert itself
  • Faults are listed on the screen with how long each one has persisted
  • After the ride, the idle screen shows the fault, the interrupted session and the pack as it is now

Watch every cell under load

The cells view gives the exact voltage of every cell with the weakest and strongest marked, and the spread across the pack. A cell drifting out of line shows up while you can still do something about it.

  • Packs over 24 cells split into two rows, so a 40-cell pack fits on one screen
  • The thermistor count is set per vehicle, and the log follows the pack
  • Outliers are highlighted at a threshold you set

See which part of the pack is running hot

Every pack thermistor, the air, and motor, inverter and coolant temperatures on one screen. A sensor that isn't fitted reads "No input", so you can tell a missing signal from a cold one.

  • Five zone colors carry state: nominal, good, advisory, warning and critical
  • They stay distinguishable with the common forms of color blindness
  • Critical is violet, so you won't mistake it for a brake light, and every zone also has a label and a value

Charge

Plug in and walk away

When the charger wakes the bike, the DBB finds the BMS and charger on its own and records the charge from both ends: what the charger delivered, and what every cell did with it.

  • Current, power, watt-hours and charger temperature, live
  • If one cell reaches the cutoff first, the DBB names it and flags that the pack needs a balance
  • A summary and a graph of every cell when the charge ends. More on charge monitoring

Every ride stays on the bike

Browse sessions as cards or a list and open any one on the touchscreen. The graph zooms and pans with one finger, and Replay plays a session back through the live screens as if it were happening now.

  • Replay at 1x, 4x, 10x or 30x, with pause and 30-second skips
  • The all-cells view draws every cell and thermistor for the whole session
  • Sessions copy to a USB stick as CSV, with a diagnostics bundle in one step
  • Months of sessions become a health history in DBB Desktop. See battery health that learns

Settings

Change limits without a laptop

BMS limits can be changed from the ride screen and charger limits mid-charge. The interface won't take a value outside safe bounds, and it shows you the profile limit as you get close.

  • High, low and balance voltage cutoffs from a swipe panel while you ride
  • Max voltage, max current, termination current and charge time while you charge
  • Rider and vehicle profiles keep each bike's setup separate

One device, three ways to run it

Full reads and sets. Lite watches only: it shows the bike's settings but can't change them. Demo needs no bike, and plays synthetic rides and charges through the real screens.

  • Lite suits a customer's bike, a new technician or an install other people can reach
  • Demo includes a ride where one cell sags on a long climb and the pack heats up around it
  • Watching a battery bank instead of a bike? See remote battery monitoring

Early-release tester units are planned at $699. Everyone on the waitlist saves $99, whichever DBB they choose: an early-release tester unit now, or DBB Lite, Full, Pro or Desktop when they're released.

  • Each tester unit is assembled and configured for your pack and charger, with your bike's profile loaded before it ships
  • A direct line to the people who built it, and software updates as they're released
  • 4.3-inch touchscreen, Raspberry Pi 4B, 12 V or USB 5 V with a LiPo backup, GPS, motion sensors and an air temperature sensor
